Responding to the Orphan Crisis
Wednesday, November 03, 2010, 12:00 AM - Saturday, November 13, 2010, 12:00 AM
We, as Apostles Church, are committed to seeing the gospel renew all things and believe strongly that the orphan crisis needs to be met with the message and mercy of Christ. Here are some immediate responses that you can participate in with us:
Prayer: We need to commit ourselves to praying for the orphan crisis of our city and asking for God’s direction in addressing it with the gospel. If you are willing to commit to joining a group who regularly prays over this issue, please contact Derek Devine.
We also encourage you to attend our night of Praying for the Orphan Crisis on Monday, November 15, at 7pm. For more information and registration, click here.
International Care: Organizations like Compassion International, Dalit Freedom Network, and World Vision allow you to provide a mere $40/month to contribute to educational opportunities, health and nutrition supplement, and church-based discipleship of youth worldwide.
There are also organizations available that directly serve orphans themselves. World Orphans has a strong emphasis on empowering indigenous populations to care for the orphan. One Home Many Hopes raises abandoned and sexually vitimized orphan girls in a protected, family environment with solid education. Lifeline Children's Services utilizes a very holistic strategy and cares for pregnant mothers as well.
Mentorship: There are a variety of available ways to care for at-risk youth and orphans in New York City through mentorship.
- Kids With A Promise (bowery.org/kidswithapromise) – This is a Hope For New York affiliate ministry based in Manhattan and requires one Saturday morning a month to mentor early teenagers transitioning to adulthood.
- Mercy First (mercyfirst.org) – A long-time mentoring organization located throughout Queens, Brooklyn, and Long Island, Mercy First connects adults to over 4,000 at-risk children.
- Mentoring USA (mentoringusa.org) – Non-profit organization connecting adults to at-risk and foster children. Requires one hour/week for a minimum of one year at a school, foster care agency, or community center.
- Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York (bigsnyc.org) – BBBS serves hundreds of foster-care youth across the five boroughs of New York City. Requires a commitment of four hours every other week for one year.
Foster Parenting and Adoption: We encourage you to begin praying about the responsibility of foster care and adoption and how this may be something the Lord could call you to in the future. Visit the New York City Administration for Child Services (nyc.gov/acs) for more information on foster care and adoption and share your consideration with Apostles Church.
